Some moments in Scripture stop you in your tracks—and Luke 7:11–17 is one of them.
Jesus interrupts a funeral.
He touches what’s untouchable.
He speaks to a dead man.
And the dead man responds.
It’s a vivid reminder that God’s not done just because it looks like the end. What others have given up on, Jesus still has power to revive. This story is a word for anyone on the verge of quitting: Don’t bury it yet.
Jesus approaches the city of Nain with a crowd of people full of celebration and expectancy—some of whom had just witnessed the healing of a centurion’s servant in Capernaum. That crowd was buzzing with faith. But as they near the gate of the city, they meet another crowd—a funeral procession.
One crowd is coming in full of life.
The other is coming out full of grief.
And right at the gate—a symbol of transition and divine access—these two worlds collide.
Maybe your life feels like that gate right now. A collision between what was and what could be. Between hope and hopelessness. Between faith and fear. But don’t miss what this story teaches us: when Jesus steps in at the gate, everything can change.
The centurion in the earlier miracle sent for Jesus. He asked for help. But this widow didn’t. She didn’t pray. She didn’t expect. She didn’t even know Jesus was coming. And still, Jesus came. That’s grace. That’s compassion. That’s a Savior who seeks us out in our pain.
In a funeral procession, the momentum is forward—to the burial. There’s no stopping. But when Jesus touches the stretcher, the entire procession halts. One touch shifts the direction from death to life. From despair to hope. And He can do that in your life too.
Jesus speaks to the boy as if he can hear—because he can. Death doesn’t hold final authority when Jesus speaks. His voice still calls dead things to life. If you’ve given up on your dream, your family, your health, your future—it’s time to open your ears again. He’s still speaking.
Have you buried your prayer life because the answer hasn’t come yet?
Have you buried your joy because sorrow has overstayed its welcome?
Have you buried a relationship, a dream, a promise because it looks too far gone?
Jesus didn’t just raise the boy. He gave him back to his mother. Restoration. Reconnection. Full circle. God doesn’t just want to revive your hope—He wants to return what’s been stolen. Don’t write the eulogy on something God still intends to use. The funeral is cancelled.
The centurion had “great faith,” but Jesus said all you need is mustard seed faith. You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to believe enough to open your mouth. Speak to your situation. Speak to your mountain. And believe the Word still works.
Don’t bury it yet.
God is still working.
He’s still speaking.
He’s still resurrecting.
